Orthopedic Management of the Lumbopelvic Region

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This two-day seminar is designed in an attempt to bridge the gap between scientific research and clinical practice.  The concepts and principles presented will emphasize current physical therapy approaches to the evaluation and treatment  of pathologies in the lumbopelvic region.  Teaching methods will include lecture (50%) and demonstration/lab practice (50%).  The focus of the seminar is on immediate clinical application of evidence-based practice in a limited access environment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Following completion of the program the participant will be able to:
  1. explain the clinical anatomy and biomechanics of the lumbopelvic region.

  2. explain the effect of aging on the lumbopelvic region and the differences between degenerative and degradative disc disease.

  3. explain the pathophysiology of disc herniation, central/lateral stenosis, radiculopathy, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, and instability.

  4. recognize the difference between global and local muscle systems and their role in stability of the lumbopelvic region.

  5. explain and identify pathomechanics of the sacroiliac region.

  6. perform an efficient and comprehensive examination of the lumbopelvic region that allows placement of patient into an appropriate treatment category.

  7. explain the role of active spinal movements for pain modulation.

  8. explain the role of traction in treating lumbar spine dysfunction.

  9. explain the rationale and perform mobilization for the sacroiliac and lumbar spine.

  10. design and implement effective exercise and stabilization programs for the lumbopelvic region.
