Orthopedic Management of the Cervical Region

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This two-day seminar is designed in an attempt to bridge the gap between scientific research and clinical practice.  The concepts and principles presented will emphasize current physical therapy approaches to the evaluation and treatment  of pathologies in the cervicothoracic region.  Teaching methods will include lecture (50%) and demonstration/lab practice (50%).  The focus of the seminar is on immediate clinical application of evidence-based practice in a limited access environment. 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Following completion of the program the participant will be able to:
  1. explain the clinical anatomy and biomechanics of the lumbopelvic region.

  2. explain the pathophysiology of cervical spondylosis, disc herniation, central/lateral stenosis, radiculopathy, instability, and thoracic outlet syndrome.

  3. explain the pathomechanical effect of flexion-extension injuries to the cervical spine (whiplash).

  4. perform an efficient and comprehensive examination of the cervicothoracic region that allows placement of patient into an appropriate treatment category.  

  5. explain the rationale and perform specific mobilization techniques for the cervicothoracic spine. 

  6. explain the role of traction in treating dysfunction of the cervical spine.

  7. design and implement effective exercise and stabilization programs for the cervicothoracic region.  

  8. explain the proposed etiologies of cervical  headache.

  9. implement mobilization and exercise strategies for the treatment of cervical headache.

INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY

David Zeigler, PT, MS, ATC, FAAOMPT 

Mr. Zeigler received a BS in Physical Therapy from UTMB-Galveston in 1983 and a MS in Kinesiology from UT-Tyler in 1989.  He has over 18 years of clinical experience in the area of outpatient physical therapy with an emphasis on evaluation and treatment of spine patients.  He completed a full-time clinical residency in orthopedic manual physical therapy in 1998 and received fellowship status in the AAOMPT in 1999.  He is currently an adjunct professor of orthopedics in the department of Physical Therapy at UT Southwestern Medical Center - Dallas and owner of a busy  private practice in Plano, TX.  Mr. Zeigler also serves as an instructor for the Manual Therapy Institute Orthopedic Residency Program.
